NAVnet – the future marine electronics are IT-networks
It is two years since FURUNO introduced the NAVnet concept – the system integrating navigational equipment in a standard IT-network. NAVnet talks the same language as the Internet and ordinary IT-networks which creates an unlimited number of possibilities to combine and exchange information. Now the eyes of the customers are opened for the possibilities offered by NAVnet to a modern navigational solution.

A logical principle
NAVnet is based on one fundamental idea – to let electronic navigational equipment talk together through the fast networking technology already available. Exactly the same technology used in almost any company when computers communicate on the Internet or in local LAN networks. A so called Ethernet; a network where the units are connected with standard cables via a HUB (Switchbox). Each connected unit have its own address called a IP-number. Ethernet transfer information much faster than the existing applications require. Also in this sense the NAVnet concept can be considered as a solution for the future.

”During the latest years we have experienced a break through for the NAVnet concept. This is the professional way to integrate marine electronics. In the future it will be a natural thing to use the Internet onboard any ship to get informations about weather, sea maps etc. Then it will be a necessity to have equipment onboard being able to communicate via the TCP/IP protocol. Our success with the NAVnet concept is probably due to this scenario together with the generel quality and the logical user interface for which NAVnet is well known” – says Mr. Oskar Thesbjerg from FURUNO DANMARK AS.

Weatherfax, Navtex and Video
The units connected in a FURUNO NAVnet network is first of all the basic functions radar, GPS, chartplotter and echo sounder. If you connect three displays then each display allows you to have full access to operate and view any function in GPS, chartplotter, radar and echo sounder. The choice is yours.

The Ethernet networking technology means that the possibilities with the NAVnet concept are endless. Due to the very fast standard network in fact only the fantasy sets any limits for the possibilities. One example is the FURUNO Fax-30 a combined Weatherfax and Navtex. Fax-30 is a black box unit and connected to the NAVnet network Weatherfax and Navtex information are displayed in full color on any connected NAVnet unit. Another possibility is to let a video signal flow into the system. With a camera connected the ”Captain” can watch blind angles at the rear or follow the work on deck during fishing.

The NAVnet displays
Sure NAVnet is more than the network itself. As a user you experience the system through the user interface of the display. With the NAVnet system FURUNO succeeded to get design and functionality merged into a balanced harmony. Nice classic design in a suitable gray color. It gives a comfortable feeling to press the bottons and an experience of over all quality. Both the monochrome SILVER LCD screens and the color TFT screens are viewed clearly and crisp even in direct sunlight.

Black Box modules
All NAVnet displays are basicly a combinet radar and chartplotter being activated by connecting the radar antenna and active GPS antenna. Other functions as Echo Sounder, Weather Fax, Navtex and Video etc. are connected as seperate units. The Echo Sounder module ETR-6 is a professional dual frequency color echo sounder at 1000W (RMS). ETR-6 present bottom and fish in 16 colors and have all fish finding functions as zoom, bottom lock zoom and alarm for fish and bottom.

User friendly interface
The NAVnet displays are systematically designed with the same structure in keyboard and software. Bottons and software are working logically and intuitively. For users having just a small amont of experience in the field of navigation it will be relatively easy to learn using the displays by ”self training”.
